our mission

Helping every child to engage and lead change in their world

Our charity’s aim is to help every child to engage and lead change in their world through democracy.

We believe that every child’s voice should be involved while they’re at school, and that pupils can learn a broad range of key skills as a result.

Asher and Greg set up the charity to give schools a practical and powerful way to engage all.

They thought school councils were great, but they often only benefit a very small group of pupils. Many pupils don’t engage with democracy beyond voting in an election once a year. How could we find a way to open up the learning to more pupils in an exciting way?

Having worked with hundreds of schools and advised the UK Parliament and Children’s Commissioner on school councils and student voice, Asher and Greg began to draw a picture of what a new model could look like.

This involved:

  • A model that explicitly involved every child

  • A pupil-friendly structure that everyone could understand

  • A clear step by step guide on how to get there

  • The tools to make it practical for schools to adopt in a busy environment.

After a year of testing and support from The Young Foundation and School for Social Entrepreneurs, the Smart School Council model was born.

The model is now used by 360 schools across the world, with 40,000 pupils taking part in a class meeting each month.

It has been an incredible journey and we are lucky to be working with so many fantastic schools, and a trustee board who support and lead our work.
