Amplifying pupil voice: Three Inspiring Examples of Pupil-Led Initiatives

Pupil voice in primary schools should be led by the pupils! The clue is definitely in the name 😉

But here’s a few ideas to help you along:

  1. Student-Led Mental Health Campaign: A group of students identified mental health as an important issue in their school community and organized a campaign to raise awareness and promote wellbeing. They created posters, organized events, and even produced a video featuring interviews with students and staff about their experiences with mental health. The campaign helped to reduce the stigma around mental health and encouraged students to seek help when needed.

  2. School Council Consultation: The school council organized a consultation process to gather feedback from students on a range of issues, such as school policies, facilities, and extracurricular activities. They used a variety of methods, including surveys, focus groups, and suggestion boxes, to gather feedback from as many students as possible. The school council then presented their findings to school leaders and worked collaboratively to address the issues raised.

  3. Student-Led Curriculum Design: A group of students identified a gap in their school's curriculum and proposed a new course focused on environmental sustainability. They worked with teachers and school leaders to develop the course content, including topics such as climate change, renewable energy, and sustainable living. The course was eventually added to the school's curriculum, giving students a voice in shaping their own education and promoting their engagement with global issues.
