The Power of Learner Voice in Education: How Smart School Council Model Amplifies it

In education, learner voice refers to students' active participation in shaping their own learning experiences. It involves listening to their feedback, opinions, and suggestions to improve the learning environment and outcomes. Research shows that student engagement in the learning process leads to increased academic achievement, and learner voice is a crucial factor in fostering this engagement.

The Smart School Council Model is a pioneering approach to learner voice, providing students with a platform to voice their opinions, ideas, and feedback in decision-making processes. It goes beyond the traditional school council model, which tends to only involve a select few students.

Research from the University of Roehampton also suggests that marginalised young people tend not to get involved.

Through the Smart School Council Model, every student in the school has the opportunity to participate in class and school council meetings. It gives students the skills and knowledge to lead discussions, manage meetings and contribute to decision-making processes.

By enabling learner voice, the Smart School Council Model promotes a sense of ownership and responsibility among students, leading to improved engagement and academic performance. Students feel empowered and valued when their opinions are heard and taken into consideration.
