Home Debate Club: Is it right that reopening schools is the number one priority?
“It’s a no brainer to me... Yes to education.”
Given that it the last week before schools started to reopen to most students in most of the UK, we thought it was fitting to see how young people across the UK felt about the prioritization of schools reopening.
In England, the Prime Minister announced the ‘roadmap’ to reopening. The first step of which was to open all schools across the country today. The PM and the government had made it quite clear that their intentions were to prioritise getting young people back into the classroom. Home Debate Club wanted to see how students through about this prioritization and whether or not they thought it was the right thing to do.
Over 6,000 young people took part in this debate - and with 60 schools represented it was a clear: Yes.

“Children have missed lots of school already and attending school is really important for their future and the future of the country. ”
“Because homeschooling isn’t just hard for students. It’s also hard for parents to juggle their work and helping their child with school.”

“[There’s] not enough protection in place at secondary. Let students go back slowly e.g. primary and year 10s and 12 first then reintroduce the other years”
“I picked this option because maybe somebody in our class has Covid -19 and we don`t know they have it then they share it with us we get it then we go home we give it to our family members .”
