Home Debate Club: Should everyone be forced to have a coronavirus vaccine?
Last week Home Debate Club had a brilliant debate about coronavirus vaccines. It was our largest debate yet - with over 6,500 participants and 65 schools from across the country getting involved!
With so many getting involved, and so many young people presenting well thought out, and quite nuanced arguments, we wanted to share with you some of the great reasoning presented and reflect on the results of the debate.
National result:
What started out as a close debate at the beginning of the week, became a resounding ‘No’ by the end of it! Young people across the country decided that everyone should not be forced to get a coronavirus vaccine - with 61% of debaters saying so.
There was plenty of different reasons why debaters argued for each side - and it was tough to narrow down, but we’ve pulled in four of favourite reasonings submitted by those who participated.
“I picked yes because I think that by doing this, things will go back to normal quicker and we can do the things we want to do again”
“It is essential for the virus to end as soon as possible and this might just be the only way. If 1 person out of 300 chooses not to get the vaccine and they catch it, all 300 are at risk ”
“I believe everyone should have a choice as to whether they’d like to take the vaccine or not. However if the choose not too, they might not be able to meet with others who have.”
“Everyone has freewill and should be able to make up their own mind about what is right for them. However they should then face the consequences.”
