The Real Power of Student Voice: A Teacher's Experience with Smart School Councils

A lot of people pay lip service to the concept of "student voice," but how many actually listen to what students have to say?

In this blog, we feature the perspective of Louise Wheeler, an amazing teacher who has been incorporating Smart School Councils at their school, Sankey Valley St. James.

Authentic Student Voice vs. Scripted Answers

Traditionally, students are given a limited scope for expression. They're often told what to say or provided with the 'right' answers, and this has always been a sticking point for educators passionate about true student voice.

At our school, students from reception to Year 6 participate in Smart School Councils, and the impact has been transformative.

What Students Know

Students are well aware that their suggestions, ideas, and issues will not only be heard but will also elicit a response.

This level of accountability and validation has made them more articulate in presenting their views. They can express their ideas effectively, challenge perspectives, and it's not confined to council sessions. It's a democratic culture that extends to every corner of the school.

Learning Democracy Early

We run Smart School Councils from Reception to Year 6. During one of the Smart School Council sessions, Year 6 students initiated a conversation about electing new house leaders, inspired by figures like Greta Thunberg.

Not only did these students show the initiative, but they also acknowledged that disagreements could coexist with mutual respect.

They have learned to understand, at a very young age, that it's okay to have diverse opinions without falling out.

Beyond Just Opinions: Actionable Change

It’s not all talk. The Smart School Council framework has been used to drive actionable changes in school policy and curriculum.

Students were consulted during the rewrite of the whole school curriculum. Their input helped shape a more responsive and engaging educational experience. This exercise didn't just make them feel heard; it made them feel powerful.

The Children Feel Empowered

The Smart School Council has instilled a sense of agency in our students. They know that their words carry weight and can incite change. For an educator, there's nothing more gratifying than to hear a student say they feel powerful in shaping their learning environment.

A Recommendation for Other Schools

If you genuinely want to amplify the voices of young people and enable every student to have a voice, Smart School Councils offer a proven route. However, if you’re looking for controlled outcomes, this democratic platform may not be for you.

Conclusion

Student voice isn’t just about giving students a platform; it's about how we respond to what they say. Smart School Councils have shown that when you listen to the kids, not only do they grow, but the entire school community grows with them.

A huge thanks to Louise for sharing her story, very impressive!
